Composting
“Composting keeps as much as 30% of waste from going to the trashcan.”

Composting
Composting has been around since pre-historic times and has been a core component of organic gardening. We at Becker Green Classroom strive for zero waste and compost the food scraps and leaves onsite in our low maintenance 3-bin compost system and use the City Run Curbside Composting Collection Program for our compostable plates and utensils.
- Organization – As part of the 3-bin compost system we pre-sort all the organic materials into twigs, leaves and food scraps into appropriate bins and then stagger the composting bins by moving the material from one bin to another till it is fully decomposed.
- Team Work – Children sift through the final compost to remove any organic material that hasn’t decomposed.
- Scientific Process – Teaching the children the process of composting by discussing the role of microbes and proportions of different materials needed for the process like Browns(dead leaves), Greens(Food Scraps, Grass Clippings, Coffee grounds) and Water(mositure)
- Green Stewards – Teaching and implementing Reduce, Reuse and Recycle process by reducing the materials in the landfills, recycling the organic waste and reusing it as a nutrient for gardening
