Growing Healthy Kids in Austin, TX


The Becker Green Classroom is a 10,000 square foot organic garden that serves as an interactive outdoor classroom in Austin, Texas.  Students’ hands-on experience in the garden fosters a deeper understanding of science, ecology and healthy food and promotes students’ sense of well-being through outdoor learning.

Our Space

Located a mile from downtown Austin, in Bouldin neighborhood since 1989 our space offers a unique outdoor learning environment. TODO: Can add more  info if necessary

Organic Gardening

Each Becker Elementary class has a designated bed where students come every week to plant, grow and harvest as they participate in activities that integrate curriculum concepts into their outdoor garden space.  (TODO: Write up about Organic Gardening – Help from Kathy and Susan)


Students from Becker built the pond in 1990. The pond is popular with kids and adults and provides a natural habitat and a learning tool for the lifecycle of tadpoles (TODO – For Kathy, Susan, Bell – Some history and write up about the Pond)

Earth Camp

Becker students share the garden with approximately 1600 other AISD Title I students who participate in the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department’s Earth Camp program. These students learn about watershed pollution, runoff and green gardening.(TODO – For Susan, Ask for more information and may be a link to their program or website)

RainWater Harvesting

Our rainwater harvesting has been around since   19xx. The children learn the concepts of recycle and reuse by watering the garden by the rainwater stored in the barrel (TODO: For Kathy, Susan)

Cooking and Healthy Eating

Children not only eat the produce raw but help cook while learning concepts like fractions, measurements and safety (TODO: Sameera. to do a write up)

Fruit Trees

We have pear, citrus, grape .. onsite so kids can learn about growing seasons of different fruits (TODO: For Kathy – Ask a list of all trees on the property as when they were planted and history – donate etc.,)

Environmental Models ??

We have watershed, water runoff, Huglekulker models to teach local ecology and different gardening techniques (TODO : For Susan – Check if we can include the Watershed models and create a page with writeup)


Children learn about being green stewards by participating in composting our onsite garden and food scrapes  (TODO: For Susan – See if she has a write up)

Herb Garden

Local Artist, long time supporter and Bouldin resident James Talbot help design the herb garden. One of the favorite places in the garden provides herbs year round to add to tasty beverages for the kids. (TODO : For Kathy, History etc.,)

Bird House

Girls Scouts team installed a bird house. (TODO: Ask Kathy for more information)

How Donations Are Used

The goals of our Donation programs are to raise funds for our operating costs, awareness about our incredible garden, and to increase volunteer involvement so that all children at our school can have the opportunity to participate.
