Our Space

Winner of three President’s Environmental Youth Awards, the Greenclassroom was started in 1989 by Carla Marshall in colloboration with then Becker Elementary Principal Judy Taylor.  The space has been a learning and collaborative grounds for many local and national community leaders from it’s inception.

Today it offers:

Organic Gardening

Every Becker Elementary class has a designated bed where students come once a week for 45mins to participate in activities that integrate curriculum concepts into their outdoor garden space.

Pond

The pond, one of the children’s favorite spot in the garden was built by 5th graders of Becker Elementary in 1994/1995 as part of a grant from Environmental Protection Agency.

Earth Camp

Becker students share the garden with City of Austin Earth Camp, award-winning water quality field science program for fifth-grade students attending Title I schools in the Austin Independent School District.

RainWater Harvesting

Harvesting rain water since 1994. Built as part of City of Austin, East Bouldin Creek cleanup.

Cooking and Healthy Eating

Children not only eat the produce raw but participate in the cooking process while learning mathematical concepts, safety and sharing.

Fruit Trees

We have a variety of fruit trees, both native and cultivated. Children learn about the growing seasons for each fruit while tasting them.

Environmental Models

Live demonstrations of different gardening and environmental models enables children to learn through auditory, visual and tactile ways.

Composting

Children learn how to be green stewards by composting onsite.

Herb Garden

Local Artist, long time supporter and Bouldin resident James Talbot designed and built the herb garden in colloboration with youth from American YouthWorks. The herb garden provides herbs year round and is one of the favorite place for children to congregrate.

Garden To Cafe

Becker Elementary is one of the school’s participating in AISD’s Garden-to-Cafe program since 2017.

Wild Life Habitat

We are a certified Texas Wild Life Habitat location which gives the children many opportunities to see different species of birds, bugs and wildlife in an urban setting.

Pollinator Garden

Stop by the Pollinator Playground located along the northern fence of the Becker Green Classroom and tell us what you discover!
