Greeting and Review
  • Start in the same space if possible for every class.
Main Lesson
  • This class is designed to go along with the Kindergarten Five Senses class. It is also a great review for any class on the senses for young children, or a sensory experience for older children. Instead of using the worksheet, older students can journal their observations.
Activity 1 (2 to 3 minutes)
  • Reinforce the five senses they learnt in the class in the garden.
  •  Ask students to name the five senses and provide examples.
Activity 2 (10 to 12 minutes)
  • Split the class into as many groups as you have adults.
  • Take the kids for a “listening walk” in the garden.

  • SIGHT – Ask the children what they see in the garden: trees, plants, structures, animals, colors, texture, shapes.
TOUCH – Have them feel the leaves, dirt, grass, plants, structures.
TASTE – Walk them to the herb garden and ask them to taste the herbs in the herb garden or herbs in your plot.
SMELL – Have them walk to the herb garden and ask them to smell the herbs.
HEAR – Ask the children to be quiet so they hear some sounds – Birds, Wind, Airplanes, outside noises.
Activity 3 (10 to 12 minutes)
  • Once they have reviewed the senses they can draw or write in their worksheets or in journals.)
  • Materials Needed: Worksheets, blank paper, or journal, and markers/pencils.
Activity 4 (remaining time)
  • If time permits, have students water the garden, weed or attend to any minor garden clean up tasks.
  • Materials Needed: None.
Cleanup (2 to 3 minutes)
  • Put away the markers/pencils and tools used to water or weed the garden
Goodbye
  • 2 to 3 minutes to say goodbye.
